About Marshall University

Marshal University is a coeducational public research university in Huntington, which is a city in the US State of West Virginia, situated in both Cabell and Wayne counties, but due to the fact that most of the city is situated in Cabell County, it was also named the county seat of Cabell.

The city of Huntington was founded in 1870, and was named after its founder Collis P. Huntington. In 2008, its population was estimated at a number of nearly 50 000 inhabitants, earning its title of the largest city within MSA (Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area), as well as the second largest city in West Virginia.

Marshall University was founded in 1837, with the help of the Guyandotte and the surrounding area residents, as a private subscription school, and it was named in honor of John Marshall, who was the 4th Chief Justice of the United States, serving from January 1801 to July 1835.

Since its founding, Marshal University grew, offering its students today, 8 different colleges and schools, through which it offers various degrees and educational programs, including the College of Liberal Arts (COLA), the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) and the College of Information Technology and Engineering (CITE).

Marshall's athletic teams are known as the Thundering Herd, who participate in the NCAA Division I and I-A for football, the university also being a member of Conference USA. The name of `Thundering Herd` was inspired from a 1925 Zane Gray novel, and a 1927 silent movie, also signed by Zane Gray.

In the 90's, the Thundering Herd have won most of the games in the NCAA Division I program, also winning the Division I-AA national championships in '92 and '96, before moving in I-A in '97, setting, as well, a Division I, FCS record, by reaching the `Final Four` of the I-AA Tournament, for 6 consecutive seasons.
